Worrying sign

The insurgent group has again hit the army hard in Tirap district. As per report an Assam Rifles convoy was ambushed in Tirap District in which one Army personnel lost his life and nine others were injured. Though no group made any claim, the police sources believes that in all probability NSCN (K) is behind the attack. In recent year UG groups have managed to strike couple of times in troubled Tirap district inflicting loss on the military. In April 2015 three army personnel were killed and four injured when suspected NSCN rebel terrorists ambushed their vehicle in Tirap district bordering Nagaland. While in same year in the month of June a group of heavily armed militants opened fire on a post belonging to the 1 Assam Rifles at Lazu, close to the Myanmar border. The militants fired several rounds but fled after the soldiers retaliated. There was however no casualties in the incident.

The way insurgent groups are attacking army on regular interval is matter of deep concern. The security establishment will have to properly study the events and try find out the loopholes. Tirap shares boundary with Nagaland and neighbouring Myanmar, where Naga insurgent groups are quite active.  Infact many rebel groups like NSCN(K), ULFA and NDFB(S) are based in Myanmar. Therefore there is pressing need to secure the Indo-Myanmar border. Easy movement of militants should be curbed along the international boundary and this can be achieved by increasing the vigil. The militants also carry out extortion to fund their cadres. Government should tighten the noose around this extortion business. Take several such measures to hit them hard.

Reeling in darkness

Dear Editor,

Through your esteemed daily I would like to draw attention of concerned authority towards the pathetic electricity supply in Kamfai valley, Wakro under Lohit district.

The said region under Wakro circle comprise of almost 10 villages out of which 8-9 villages still live in darkness. Very unfortunately, despite availability of proper road connectivity since last decade and favourable geographical features, the people in the region still manage on bamboo fire flames and diesel lamps for all the activities as the sun sets.

This is the situation though department of power claims to have electrified the region since 2011 under Rajiv Gandhi Gram Vidyutikaran Yojana. The yojana has itself come to an end to be replaced by Deen Dayal Upadyaya Gramin Jyoti Yojana but the ray of electrical bulb is still a hope for the poor villagers and school going kids in the villages. The poles are erected, lines are wired, and the villagers are eagerly waiting for the current to pass through those wires since 2011.

The poor villagers are helpless and the department seems to be helpless too. Pity the villagers who left behind all their agricultural works volunteering to clear jungle to help the dept. to electrify the region at the earliest. But their hopes remained a hope.

The junior Engineer, power says even if the current is supplied, the low capacity transformers installed in all the villages in the region cannot provide proper power to individual houses. If this is the cruel fact, why these transformers were installed? Now, who is responsible for such negligence? Why would the ignorant villagers suffer for someone else’s wrong deeds? Department of power demands the villagers to write to the higher authority for immediate actions and on the other hand villagers say they are tired of sending their representatives for the same  issue several times. They feel helpless and hopeless now.

The poor people thanks ‘The Art of Living’ and ‘Wildlife Division Wakro’ for their kindness to distribute solar lamps to every household. Students say they feel comfortable doing their homework’s under those solar lamps. Otherwise, the only excuse for not completing their home works was “Darkness”.

It is indeed a matter of shame that region like Wakro with such a pleasant geographical features is still reeling in darkness. Every individual inhabiting the region and public representatives should be ashamed of being parts of such a massive failure.Villagers are always ready to volunteer. The concern department needs to provide the necessary materials to solve the problem.

Through this letter, on behalf of the villagers, I would sincerely appeal the concerned authority to take the matter into priority and act positively at the earliest.

Yours,

Ajitso Ama

Golden jubilee celebration and alcohol

Dear Editor,

Through the column of your esteemed daily, I as a commoner would like to appeal to the authority concern especially education department to think about a menacing practice which may have cascading effect on the entire gamut of academic scenario and psyche of young students in schools.

In West Siang district, the Golden Jubilee celebrations of various Upper Primary and Primary schools have recently concluded.  50 years is a long journey for any academic institution and it must be celebrated. It is an occasion to look back at the academic excellence of the institute, achievements in various fields and the alumni base serving the society in different capacities and I feel it is a time to re-dedicate oneself with renewed promise and a road map ahead for the further journey of the school or institute towards betterment and excellence. It is also a time for introspection. But what has been observed and the thought that has baffled me is the construction of Poka(local wine) stalls in the playground of these schools and selling it in the vicinity of school during celebration period which continued for good 12-15 days !  Selling Poka so openly in broad daylight in school campus?  Is poka that important or an unavoidable item even for celebrating an auspicious occasion like the Golden Jubilee of a school, which in fact is a Temple of Learning?

The organizing committee constituted for such occasions can come up with plethora of ideas and sometimes with the bizarre ones, but I feel it is the duty of the custodian of the school, in this case, the learned teachers as they are called or addressed to counter it. In fact they should have opposed it tooth and nail. What is the logic behind allowing these stalls to sell poka in the school campus and that too in such an exorbitant rate? This way, are we not glorifying the poka culture amongst the school children? If need be, they should have allowed Tea Stalls or some Exhibition stalls. Undoubtedly, book stalls would have been a far better option and a very enriching experience for the students as well as the teaching staff. And this golden jubilee celebration in most schools has coincided with the Children’s day on the 14th Nov. What kind of an example are we setting in front of the growing children and students? Was this not in the knowledge of the concerned authorities or the education department? Moreover, the ill-effects of this easy access to liquor by the youths in our society are known to all. Or perhaps, my thoughts have gone obsolete or outdated and not in tune with the changing times. But even after a 2nd and 3rd thought over, my conscience still says that selling of poka in a school playground or compound is a strict No No for me. Is this the Kalyug Effect or is this the rippling of the 3G or 4G effect? The buzz word seems to be just Entertainment, Enter-tainment and just Entertainment, deviating from the main theme midway.

Without paying heed to such things which may seem trivial at the moment and without adopting a damage control exercise to nip the problem in the bud, the tall claims of the authorities and those at the helm of affairs in ‘reviving’ the education sector and taking the ‘academic graph high’ in the state would be a futile exercise.

Yours,

Raja Jini
